Web Design and Web Development Services
I first started working on the web in the mid-1990s. It now accounts for most of my work. The nature of the work ranges from producing an entire site to providing specific services (coding, graphics, animation, or Flash™) to other web companies. (See about me for information on specific services and skills.)
Web Standards
To say that the web is changing is obvious. But one of the more promising developments is the emergence of Web Standards. An in-depth discussion of standards is beyond the scope of this page but an important element of Web Standards is the separation of structure, content, and visual design through the use of xhtml and css (cascading style sheets).
A great many websites have been created through coding and graphic tricks that have resulted in an intractable tangle of content and code. Separation makes changing the visual look of a website much easier. It also greatly eases the updating of a website’s content through simplified coding and facilitates extending and upgrading content for newer web technologies. Moreover, standards-compliance enhances site accessibility for users with disabilities.
Implementing Web Standards is one of my priorities for present and future work.
Updating Website Content
One challenge with websites is keeping them current. If you have the budget, you can pay for specifically-trained staff to update the site or you can enlist the services of someone like me.
But there's another option: developing a site so that it can be updated by the client. This can either be done through online databases and appropriate server technology or by using moderately-priced content management software. For the former, I would use MySQL and PHP, either directly in the webpage or through a Flash™ application. I use Adobe/Macromedia Contribute™ for the latter.
