Thomas Jefferson Fossil Collection
Just about everybody knows that Thomas Jefferson was an author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the United States. But far fewer know of his interest in fossils and his expertise in natural history.
This online exhibit was commissioned by the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia to highlight a historically significant fossil collection housed at the institution. In addition to showcasing many of the fossils collected through Jefferson's sponsorship, this exhibit explores many of the scientific ideas and personalities xxxx in the early years of the American republic and the beginnings of paleontology.
